Types of Letters of Recommendation

A letter of recommendation is one of the documents that a job applicant has to prove he/she is capable of taking a role that has fallen vacant. The recommendation letter should be written by a trusted person that knows you well and can vouch for your skills, character and experienced to the potential employer.

Writing a good recommendation letter does not require rocket science skills. The main thing to keep in mind is highlight the skills that will make the person stand out for the particular role he/she is applying for.

There are different types of References letters you can write. Majority of the letters fall under one of the following categories:

i)             Character References

These letters are usually written by associates, kin or pals, and mainly attest to the character of a person. As expected, the letters are written by persons that know the applicant's true habits or characters, which may be different from what is portrayed in the professional life. ii)            Academic References

Asking for a Reference. Academic references help to highly the capability, curiosity and aptitude of a person in reference to an academic environment. These letters are usually written by academic professionals such as professors, teachers or coaches that have directly interacted with the applicant in academic matters. A good academic reference letter should include character traits of the individual that are not easy to deduce by looking at resumes, transcripts or test scores.

iii)           Job References

These letters of recommendation are usually written by a supervisor or manager to give a professional advice on an individual with regards to employment. The letter should save a potential employer the trouble of having to call back the referees in the resume to do a check. Some of the information that should be provided in the job reference letter of recommendation include professional qualities and talents of the individuals

General Consideration when Writing a Letter of Recommendation

The letter of recommendation should be useful to the person that a job applicant will present it to. Thus, it should be customized for the specific roles that an individual may be applying. Individuals receiving the letter of reference have a few expectations and little time to review it. Generally, the letter should show that the recommender knows the applicant well enough to recommend them, understands their personality and generally vouches for them for a particular role.
